Hi. I’m busy with my Phd at ukzn in the field of university entrance exams. Your works are of great benefit to me. I was wondering what’s your take on entrance exams like the nbt in light of krashen’s NUT (no unnecessary testing) ? Do you think that the nbt is really necessary when we have the matric results to give us an indication of students language and academic abilities? Do you know of any studies that compared the matric and nbt tests?

      Hi Mohammed
The matric exams are not reliable. For this reason, the NBT, I suggest, is necessary.

As for research on the comparison between matric results and NBT, I doubt whether any exists. The only way to do this research is to obtain the raw data of matric results from the Ed Dept. It is highly unlikely the Ed Dept would hand over their data to anybody outside their own circle.

    Hi Raph

Could it be done by getting the data from NBT candidates? Probably before sitting for the NBT- to test whether any correlations exit between the matric and NBT exams. The NBT could be an unnecessary exercise if the study finds a strong correlation between the two. Just a thought.

Yes you could do that. You need to get the results of each of their subjects to see how they correlate. The English mark is very important. I would think you need a minimum of their overall symbol and the symbol for English, and correlate these with the NBT.

Do you know how to use stats?
